Expulp Verdict vs Turnitin

Turnitin is academic integrity suite. Verdict is a different instrument: it measures what a piece adds beyond what AI already knows and what is already published, claim by claim. Here is what each one tells you, and when you want both.

What Turnitin does

Turnitin compares student work against a huge database of papers, publications and the web, reports a similarity score, and adds an AI-writing indicator. It is sold to institutions.

Where it is good

  • The largest private database of prior student work and paywalled publications.
  • Deep integration with learning management systems and grading.
  • A similarity report instructors know how to read.

What it cannot tell you

  • Similarity is not the opposite of originality: a well-cited paper shows high similarity; a vacuous one with no sources shows none.
  • The AI indicator is a style classifier with the known limits of every detector and is marked as such by Turnitin itself.
  • Nothing in the report says whether the argument adds anything, holds up, or is the student's own thinking.

Use both when

Turnitin is infrastructure for institutions. Verdict is a tool a writer or editor picks up today; for teaching, it shows a student which of their claims are their own.

Questions

Is Verdict for schools?

It is not sold as an integrity tool. Teachers use it to show students what original thinking looks like in their own work.

Does Verdict have an AI indicator?

No. Claims any AI would make are marked as such, which is a different and more useful statement.

Can an institution get an API?

Yes, the same API everyone uses, with batches.
