Expulp Verdict vs Originality.ai
Originality.ai is AI detector and plagiarism checker. Verdict is a different instrument: it measures what a piece adds beyond what AI already knows and what is already published, claim by claim. Here is what each one tells you, and when you want both.
What Originality.ai does
Originality.ai estimates the probability that a text was produced by a language model and scans it for copied passages. It is built for agencies and publishers who need to know whether a writer used AI and whether text was lifted.
Where it is good
- A probability of AI authorship per passage, with a readable breakdown.
- Plagiarism scanning against a large web index, including verbatim matches.
- Team features: scan history, shareable reports, a Chrome extension.
What it cannot tell you
- Its question is who typed the words. A piece written by a person who restates what everyone already knows passes; a piece written with AI help that brings real reporting fails. Neither outcome tells you if the piece was worth publishing.
- Detection accuracy falls on edited and paraphrased text, and non-native writers are flagged more often, by the vendor's own and independent accounts.
- It does not read the claims: nothing about credibility, effort or whether the ideas already exist in other words.

Use both when
Use Originality.ai when a contract requires proof that no AI was used. Use Verdict to decide whether the piece deserves to be published, and what would make it better.
Questions
Does Verdict detect AI writing?
No. It measures what a piece adds, whoever or whatever typed it. A fully AI-written piece that reports nothing new scores low because its claims are things any model would say, not because it was detected.
Can I use both?
Yes. Run Verdict first, on the ideas; run a detector only where policy demands it.
Which is cheaper?
Verdict's quick read is free and its full verdicts are a dollar each or less in packs; detectors sell monthly plans by word count.
