Privacy notice for the Expulp Verdict extension

The extension does one thing: it scores the article you point it at. This notice says exactly what leaves your browser, when, and what happens to it.

What the extension sends, and when

  • When you open the panel or choose a Verdict item in the right-click menu: the address of the page or link, or the text you selected, together with the page title. Nothing is sent while you browse with the panel closed.
  • If the page cannot be fetched by our server (a paywall, a login wall), the panel asks your permission-scoped tab for the article text it already shows and sends that text instead. This happens only for the page you asked about, only after the fetch failed.
  • A random install identifier, generated on your device when the extension is installed. It counts the free quick reads of an install that is not signed in. It is not linked to your browser, device or Google account.
  • Your verdict.expulp.com session cookie, if you are signed in on the site, so the panel can show your credits and spend them. The extension never sees your password; sign-in happens on the website.

What it does not do

  • It does not read pages you have not asked it to read, and it keeps no browsing history.
  • It has no analytics, no advertising identifiers and no third-party scripts. The only server it talks to is verdict.expulp.com.
  • It does not modify the pages you visit.

What happens on our side

Quick reads fetch the page and search for related pages through our search and extraction providers. Full verdicts also send the article text to a large language model to split it into claims and weigh them. Results are stored so that the same piece is not analysed twice, so that your history works, and so that first publishers are protected against later copies. Account data is kept while the account exists. Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see card numbers.

Permissions, and why

  • sidePanel: the panel the report appears in.
  • activeTab and scripting: to read the title and, when fetching fails, the text of the one tab you asked about. No access to other tabs.
  • contextMenus: the right-click entries.
  • storage: the install identifier and the request handed from the menu to the panel.
  • Host permission for verdict.expulp.com: to call the Verdict API with your session.

Your choices

Uninstalling the extension removes the install identifier. Deleting your account from the dashboard removes your history and credits. Questions: [email protected].
